Image 1 - This Way Joshua Tree in Death Valley. Digital colour converted to B&W. I just liked the look of the tree waving us on. |

Image 2 - Fence & Tree Taken
near Genoa, California. Digital colour converted to B&W and given an
IR effect. It looked good in colour but I'm not so sure about B&W. |

| Mark Brimblecombe | Very nice composition. I little overexposed in my opinion. | |
| John Barnes | ||
| Karen Talbot | 4/4/07 |
I do like the way you have cleared the tree above the clouds and the mountains behind. It gives the tree strength, and also allows you to wander down the track unheeded. |
| Bill Hodges | 24/4/07 |
Love the shape of the tree and its placement in the frame. The shadow
gives interest to the image. I feel maybe darkening of the grasses
around the tree could make this stronger. |
| Peter McMahon | 29/6/07 |
try a horizontal flip, my eye kept going out of the image. Perhaps a bit more contrast would help. I really think a vertical might have been best. |
| Shona Kebble | 20/7/07 |
A good subject for B&W.
I like the way you have included all the shadow on the ground filling in
the space. Composition is very good. |

| Mark Brimblecombe | I personally don't go for the B&W version. It would be nice to see the colour. Perhaps you could email me the colour version to put along side this on the website. The overexposed foreground to the tree could be a problem. | |
| John Barnes | ||
| Karen Talbot | 4/4/07 |
I am a real sucker for the skeleton of winter trees- this one is superb.I think the B/W effects with the IR has enhanced the skeleton very well. |
| Bill Hodges | 24/4/07 |
This image has a negative look to it with the tree branches blending
into the sky. Good lead in line with the free going towards the tree.
Cloning the little bit of wire out on the left
and the little twig bottom left
would make this a top image. |
| Peter McMahon | 29/6/07 |
a tighter crop to emphasise more of the trees features |
| Shona Kebble | 20/6/07 |
Very nice effect. It
suits the subject. I feel there is a little too much foreground
with not much on interest in it. |

Image 1 - The Old West |
Doug's Comments: 'The Old West' was taken in California in a an old ghost town. I have included this at your request as it was chosen for inclusion in the 2007 PSNZ book (click here to email comments to Secretary) |

| Bob McCree | 20/2/07 |
Nice counterpoint between the old cart and the building, but I would prefer to see the cart featured a little more prominently in the image to fill the empty sky on the left. Good colour and exposure. |
| Mark Brimblecombe | 6/2/07 | Excellent. Did you use a polarizing filter? |
| John Barnes | ||
| Karen Talbot | 4/1/07 |
I love the composition of this, wide spaces in the sky and surrounding land. I love the low perspective. Sorry i can't fault it. |
| Bill Hodges | 27/12/06 |
Lovely image , good Composition, Has depth of interest. Good overall balance. Well exposed |
| Peter McMahon | 5/2/07 |
nice image, showing good colour and composition. |
| Shona Kebble | 16/1/07 |
I like the wispy clouds in this but would crop it down to a panorama or maybe have got in closer to the cart and made more of a foreground feature of it. |
| Image 2 - St Bathans | ||
| Bob McCree | 20/2/07 |
Lovely lighting and exposure. Good composition between the two outcrops helped by the stronger lighting on the foreground cliff. Perhaps a tad off the bottom to further improve the balance? |
| Mark Brimblecombe | 6/2/07 | National Geographic... or NZ Geographic magazine material (where is St. Bathans) in my opinion. |
| John Barnes | ||
| Karen Talbot | 4/1/07 |
I ,too, have spent time in this area and find it hard to get a satifying image. The light is lovely, maybe a tighter crop along bottom, and right hand side would strengthen it. I love the rock forms. |
| Bill Hodges | 28/12/06 |
I’ve seen many shots taken of St Bathans. And I must say this is one of the best Great lighting on the cliffs in the foreground. Well exposed. Lovely tonal range through out the image. |
| Peter McMahon | 28/12/06 |
an excellent St. Bathans image showing nice colour and composition. Re your comments, perhaps more subtle darkening of shadows and increase midtone/highlights and try to make for a more contrasty [light dark] image, may give more impact. |
| Shona Kebble | 16/1/07 |
A lovely image of St Bathans. A wee crop off the bottom to get rid of some water would bring the outcrop further down in the image making it not so central. |

| Mark Brimblecombe | 8/10/06 | I would like to know how you got this image. It looks like the 'old' red filter and B&W film. Well the sky is fantastic. Not sure about the almost total lack of detail on the foreground. |
| Bob McCree | 30/10/06 |
Nice sky in this one Doug but I feel the silhouetted trees are just a little lost in the darker areas of the cloud. |
| John Barnes | 22/12/06 |
I like the clouds and the storm affect in monochrome look great. The tree to the left provides a nice foreground |
| Karen Talbot | 11/10/06 |
Really love the clouds-I am a sucker for stormy clouds.I feel the trees don't enhance the image tho.Not sure why they don't "fit"-the image is too complicated and it is impossible to isolate the trees. |
| Bill Hodges | 12/10/06 |
Great sky giving the image lots of impact. Would have like to see all of the tree on the left in the picture.. Still a top B&W image |
| Peter McMahon | 14/10/06 |
strong moody clouds, not unlike an IR effect. Would be a stronger image flipped, the eye tends to run out of the image, looking for a focal point. |
| Shona Kebble | 28/10/06 |
Lovely sky but the trees tend to let it down. I am not sure whether it is because there are only 2 trees but they are also little messy. |
| Image 2 | ||
| Mark Brimblecombe | 8/10/06 | Nice composition. I like the way the illuminated island seems to float out from the background, but think this effect could be enhanced with a little more contrast by darkening the background trees, or darkening the whole image for that matter. Some surfaces on the rocks are too bright. How does the right side of your histogram look? |
| Bob McCree | 30/10/06 |
Nice peaceful feel about this one Doug but perhaps, just a little too laid back in its presentation. I would prefer to see a little more punch in the colour of the trees and the foregrond bank to complement the generally good composition of these elements. |
| John Barnes | 22/12/06 |
A nice image. The colour does not seem strong enough to me and my eye is taken to the centre of the image where the trees stand out. But I am not sure if they are the main subject in the image. The rocks in the foreground hold it well together. |
| Karen Talbot | 11/10/06 |
The sky at the top of the image is very distracting, and I think the softness of the image needs to be enhanced a little.A polariser may have intensified the colour, and cut the whiteness on the rocks. |
| Bill Hodges | 12/10/06 |
Lovely colours. Like the way the trees in the center stand out from the trees behind giving it a 3D effect. The rocks around the shore line makes the even a stronger image. Good exposure. A well seen and a well taken image |
| Peter McMahon | 14/10/06 |
nice lighting with good contrast and saturation. Found myself wandering, to find a strong point of interest. |
| Shona Kebble | 28/10/06 |
I like the way you have darkened around this image to isolate the trees in front of the background trees. I would like to see the gaps in the background trees cloned out to make a solid wall of trees. Maybe this image would look better flipped so the focal point is on the right side which would prevent the eye going out of the image. |
